Deciding Who to Train
Public Schools – Selecting your trained responders.
For NYC Public schools, care should be taken when selecting the staff members who will complete the CPR/AED training and will become members of the building response team. A CPR/AED responder needs to be available whenever a medical emergency occurs in the school and code blue alert is called. This includes before school programs like breakfast, and after school activities. Teachers can’t respond to a code blue if it means leaving the students in their classroom unattended. For this reason, administrative staff, school aids, custodians and cafeteria staff are often excellent candidates to be trained as CPR/AED responders in a school. Reviewing a responder candidate’s daily schedule and tasks will help determine their availability to respond.
